Charles County Women - United in Giving Women Helping Women in Need
This initiative began back in November 2004, when a group of women got together at an invitational tea. The purpose was to form a giving society made up of women willing to learn more about the needs of uninsured and underinsured women and their chilcren in Charles County, and also willing to give of their own time and financial resources to help them.
Since that time, more than $51,000 has been raised. The women who contribute leadership-level donations of $500 or more meet each year, review proposals, and decide how to spend the funds that have been raised. Over the years, they have funded such vital services as dental screenings and preventive treatments, OB Ultrasounds, cervical cancer screenings, lab services and mammograms, vaccinations for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), portable cribs, and mental health screenings and treatment for postpartum and other forms of depression. The target population is women and children who are uninsured or underinsured and who live in Charles County.
Each year, in November, the steering committee hosts a tea to introduce a new group of women to the program. 100% of the funds raised through the initiative go into the project with administrative costs being absorbed by the United Way of Charles County Community Impact fund. Donations of all amounts are welcome. Methods of payment include cash, personal or corporate check, charge, and payroll deduction.
