Advocate
What does it mean to advocate? Simply put, it just means to speak out -- to champion a cause. It doesn't mean that you have to go to your state legislature or Capitol Hill, or write letters or speak out at public meetings -- although those are all good ways to advocate.
But what if you're not a letter writer or a public speaker? What can you do?
Well, you can learn about the issues that affect your community. The fact that you're looking at this website indicates that you want to learn more. Read the newspapers. Listen to what politicians and other community leaders have to say. Attend neighborhood meetings just to listen. Form opinions and share your opinions with others. United Way of Charles County staff serves on many community councils and committees that are working to give a voice to those critically impacted by existing conditions. Almost all of them welcome and even require input from the community-at-large. Click here and we will guide you towards finding a place to make a difference.
One very good way to advocate is to vote. By voting for the candidate of your choice, you send a message about the issues that are important to you. Aren't registered? Click here to find out how. It's easy, it's free, and it COUNTS!
